San Remo Fisherman’s Co-op

San Remo Fisherman’s Co-op was formed in 1948 to serve the needs of the local commercial fishermen. Originally the primary target species was couta, the staple fish of Melbourne’s fish and chip shops at the time.

These days the San Remo boats harvest a variety of species including gummy shark, scallops, octopus, wrasse and southern rock lobster. Each species is carefully managed using sustainable fishing methods and catch limits, to allow the fishermen to keep bringing seafood to the community for years to come.

Within the Co-op, the catches are processed for sale at their fresh seafood outlet, and supplied to local cafes, restaurants and supermarkets. Much of the catch is featured in the menu of the Co-op’s popular fish and chippery, including gummy shark, flathead, snapper, scallops, and more.

For decades Co-op staff have fed the Westernport pelicans with fish off-cuts from the processing room, and the tradition continues to this day. Every day at midday, up to thirty local pelicans arrive at the San Remo Pier for their daily serve of fish. The public always enjoy the up close and natural experience, and at the same time the Co-op staff also share important education on plastic pollution and environmental sustainability.
